Where is Tonina located
The archaeological site of Tonina is located in the state of Chiapas, 13km from the city of Ocosingo. The easiest way to visit the ruins is from the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, you can hire a tour or take a bus to Ocosingo.
It’s very easy to take a van from Ocosingo to the ruins.

Each Mayan city is unique, and Tonina is no exception, in this place, it was common to make decapitations for prisoners of war. It was a very important city during the 7th to 9th centuries. Tonina means, The Stone House (La casa de piedra)
Although many discoveries have been made about these ruins, the specialists are still investigating, since there is rich archaeological evidence here, many of them in excellent condition.
Structures in Tonina
The Great Pyramid has 7 levels, and 260 steps in total, it is said that the easiest way to climb the pyramids is sideways.
This majestic archeological site covers 6 hectares, and you can see 2 Ballcourts, the Acropolis, the Palace of the Underworld, and the impressive Mural of the Four Suns or Four Eras. This is a stucco mural of 16 meters long, it represents a supernatural scene, about the alternate domain that exists in the underworld, on earth and sky and how the deities of the four directions are cyclically replaced during the year.
The highest pyramid in Mexico, is not just one simple pyramid, during the visit as you go up, you will see an incredible maze, the spaces used for bedrooms and bathrooms.
One of the most mysterious spaces in Tonina is the Temple of the Earth Monster, a representation of a stucco monster devouring a solar stone sphere. This temple has an exact orientation towards the spring and winter solstices.

- The Archaeological site opens daily 8-5 except holidays.
- Visit the Site Museum inside the ruins, it is small but contains important pieces and is worth seeing.
- Remember to be very careful and protect the fragility of these extraordinary sites.
- Do not forget water, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and maybe a hat or cap.
