Tepoztlan the perfect place to experience a unique mystic town.
Tepoztlan is another Magic Town (Pueblo Mágico) in Mexico, and yes this a really Magic Place.
I heard two different legends about this beautiful place, one says that the son of the god Quetzalcoatl was born in Tepoztlan; and the residents asseverate this place have a very unique spiritual energy.
In my case, this is my mother’s favorite Magic Town. We visited for several festivities and it’s always a pleasure to come back.
How to get to Tepoztlan
Tepoztlan is located in Morelos state, really close to Mexico City.
- The best option to get there is to take a bus at South Terminal (Taxqueña) bus station. It’s a direct bus to Tepoztlan for less than 2 hours.
You are not going to need a car in Tepoztlan, you are able to walk everywhere and discover all the secrets and legends of this place.

What to do in Tepoztlan, Mexico
- My first option is to walk in this friendly and charming place. Enjoy the cobbled streets, unique houses and hidden treasures.
Take your time, there is no rush in here, just enjoy the weather and don’t be shy to talk with the locals.
- If you are interested in meditation, relaxing Spas or Healing treatments this is the place for you.
Tepoztlan is famous for its wonderful Holistic Resorts (if you’re looking for a hotel and a spa there are plenty). You can choose between different spa treatments on the different hotel options; or maybe you can explore the Temazcal, a pre-hispanic treatment to cleanse your body and your mind.
Hiking to the el Tepozteco.
There is an Aztec pyramid at the top of the Tepozteco mountain, built between 1150 and 1350.
It would take you an hour to hike to the top, except on a rainy day (it took me a little bit more and it was quite harder).
But all is worth it at the top, next to the Tepoztlan pyramid and with the amazing views. It’s hard to describe, you need to feel it.
(My Grandmother hike to the pyramid when she was pregnant with my Mom! But they used to do rock climbing, so for them was easy)
Parroquia de la Natividad.
Built between 1555 and 1580 this monastery and Parish is located in the center of the town.
It was built by Dominican priests and locals of the ancient Tepoztlan.
- Another good idea is to check at the local market; There are wonderful handicrafts, Mexican toys, souvenirs and also tarot card readings, aura cleansing, aura photography or different “magic” services.
Of course, it’s up to you, but it’s a different type of market with really good energy.
Where to eat in Tepoztlan
My best choice is always the local food in markets or casual restaurants.
In Tepoztlan the food is delicious and really cheap. You can find also local food in the streets.
If you are looking for something more, my best options for restaurants are Los Colorines, La Veladora, and El Ciruelo. Delicious Mexican food and excellent service.
But the place you can’t miss is Tepoznieves; an ice cream shop where you can taste unique different flavors. Maybe spicy ones, with liquor or the best god’s ice creams. And the decoration: Mexican Colorful.
Tepoztlan is one of those places that you can stay only one day or maybe more, it’s up to you. I know you are going to love Tepoztlan because it’s a place where you feel the Mexican culture, the history, the colors and the traditional lost in time town.
