The Best Things to do in Xico

In this beautiful Pueblo Magico, you will find a lot to taste and see! Museums, churches, natural wonders, and of course delightful food.

Santa Maria Magdalena Parish

This is the main historical monument of Xico, an emblematic and very important place, the construction began in the 16th century. The Parish is dedicated to Maria Magdalena, every year in July different celebrations are held in her honor.

These festivities are a very important part of Xico, and the people celebrate with processions, colorful flowers, and gifts in her honor. The famous colorful sawdust carpets are made by the local people from the town entrance to the Parish.

Dress Museum

On one side of the Parish, you’ll find the Dress Museum where you can see more than 800 dresses. All dresses have been donated to Maria Magdalena and some date back to 1900, each year the collection increases due to donations during the festivities.

Texolo Waterfall

One of the most wonderful attractions of Xico is the beautiful Texolo Waterfall, the main waterfall is approximately 24 m. high.
There are a few viewpoints where you can admire the waterfall and the amazing landscape from above, I recommend you wear comfortable shoes since it can be a bit slippery.

The road to the waterfall in the middle of the rainforest and surrounded by so much vegetation makes it a fantastic hike.

I had no idea but the movies, Romancing the Stone, and Clear and Present Danger were filmed in this waterfall. I think it’s a famous waterfall!

Moles Tour

If there is something that characterizes Xico, it is his delicious mole.

Mole is a traditional meal in several places in Mexico, but I have to tell you that it is different in every place and state. The Mole of Veracruz is very different from the one in Oaxaca, Puebla, Guerrero, etc.

You should try this delicacy, prepared with more than 20 ingredients. Some of them are different types of dried chiles, chocolate, banana, prunes, sesame seeds, peanuts, almonds, onion, cinnamon, bread, tortillas, and more.

You have to taste the Mole!

As you can see it is certainly a very special dish that you should try and one of the sweetest moles in Mexico. Also, the Mole is an excellent souvenir of this place, you will want to take home this delight and taste it again.

Danzante Xiqueno Museum

At this museum, you can learn about the history of traditional dances, colorful masks and all about the festivals in this town.

Hoja de Maiz Museum

This is a very different museum where all the pieces are made of corn leaves. In the museum, you can see through the figures a bit of the history and customs of the town.

These two museums are fantastic and kids love them!

How to get to Xico

It is located just 20 km from Xalapa, Veracruz and only 9 km from Coatepec, which is another wonderful Magic Town famous for its delicious coffee.

I recommend you take a day trip and visit both towns Coatepec and Xico, on your own or a Coffee Tour. If you want to do it on your own, you can easily take a bus from Xalapa, just check the schedules.

If you want to explore a little more, you can spend a night there and enjoy more of this place. I recommend bringing warm clothes since at night it is usually colder.

Where to Stay

I like to spend even one night in these beautiful places, enjoy the sunset and relax. If you want to stay, I recommend two places to spend a very pleasant time.

Very close to the waterfall, and surrounded by beautiful nature. A very good option in Xico.

Hotel Hacienda San Bartolo

Also very close to the waterfall, a very nice place for hiking.

Where to eat

Even on a Day Trip, something really important is to find the best place to eat and traditional food.

The weather in this region is perfect for growing coffee, and there are several Coffee Haciendas that you could visit. The coffee tours are very popular in that area so, that’s a great and delicious activity.

Of course, we don’t forget about Mole, the most important dish in Xico.

El Mirador Restaurant

If you want to enjoy a delicious meal and at the same time a fascinating view of the waterfall, this is a great option.

Meson Xiqueno Restaurant

Authentic local food, the mole was very tasty. I think it’s a good restaurant in town.

Danubio Azul Bakery

Try the delicious freshly bread in this traditional bakery. Hopefully, you can taste Day of the Dead bread or Kings Day bread.

The best things to do at Xico

There are many festivities that show us the folklore and traditions of Xico during the year. Some of the most important, during the Holy Week, Maria Magdalena celebration with the sawdust colorful carpets, Day of the Dead and Christmas Posadas.

If you have time to explore a little more of Veracruz, I recommend you visit El Tajin Ruins, a pre-Columbian archaeological site that was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The best of Xico as in all the Magic Towns of Mexico is certainly to walk and discover charming places. I’m sure you’ll fall in love with this beautiful town!
